Participants must be at least 18 years old, United States citizens or on an applicable visa, including an F-1 student or work visa. We prefer participants who are eligible to work in the United States.

What language am I coding in?

This competition is open reference and open language.

    Can people compete in teams?

OpenBracket is an individual, head-to-head, single elimination, playoff bracket-style competition. Help from teammates will not be permitted.

How are we expected to behave?

OpenBracket is fierce competition, but it's all in the spirit of fun. We require an atmosphere of inclusivity and completely free of any kind of harrassment. We love the Code of Conduct developed by Girl Develop It, and we will enforce it at OpenBracket.

    FAQ

Where is it being held and when do I need to be there?

A more detailed agenda will be shared. This is an overview, subject to slight change. The hotel is walkable to the venue, The Queen Theater at 500 N. Market St., Wilmington, Del.

    • Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 (6-8:30p): Registration and Open Seeding for the tournament by way of an algorithmic challenge. All participants must arrive before 7pm. There will be networking and social time afterward.
    • Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 (8am-7pm): Including optional breakfast and to be followed by networking and social time, including live music. The day will result in a final four.
    • Sunday, October 22, 2017 (8am-12pm): Including optional breakfast and to finish out with closing remarks, this will feature the final championship and award ceremony.

Are hotel accommodations provided for walk-ons?

No, hotel accommodations are only provided to those who have been invited for their performance in the Online Trials. Walk-ons will need to secure their own accommodations. We recommend the Doubletree on King Street.

What hotel are participants staying in?

The Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Downtown Wilmington at 700 N King St, Wilmington, DE 19801.If you are checking into the hotel on Friday, October 20th and checking out on Sunday, October 22nd, OpenBracket will make your hotel reservations.

    Where will I eat?

Dinner will be provided Saturday. There are several nearby restaurants that we can recommend, depending on your needs and preferences. Wilmington’s Lower Market Street has an active and walkable restaurant community.

    What is the event format?

OpenBracket is a head-to-head, algorithmic tournament challenge. That means all participants will compete directly with other participants in several rounds. In 2016, the event format included teams, but that is NOT the case in 2017, which will only involve individual competitors.

What will the challenges be like?

The challenges will look like those offered on Hackerrank.com, the service we’ll be using for the in-person championship. Participants will be given personalized algorithmic challenges they’ve never seen before. Winners will be objectively graded on their performance.

If I lose, what will I do then?

There will be activities throughout the weekend, including several side competitions to keep you engaged. Plus, we’ll make sure the competition itself is interesting enough that you’ll want to follow. Throughout the weekend, there will be live music, competition, local coffee and beer and other competitions and activities.

    What should I bring?
    • Laptop and charger (we can accommodate limited desktop setups that you choose to travel with but ask you be respectful of other participants and their space. Please tell us if you plan on doing this so we can reserve space by contacting win@openbracket.org.)
    • If you want hard wire internet access (more on that below), bring a Thunderbolt adapter or usb 3.0/ethernet adapter.
    • Backup laptop in case of emergency. We will not be providing hardware or backup computers.
    • Any overnight gear if you are staying over. (You should!)
    • A positive, competitive and fun spirit.
What are the limits of intellectual property on these projects?

We’ll be following the Hackerrank Terms of Service here. (hackerrank.com/terms-of-service)

    What is the internet situation?

The Queen Theater, our venue, is wired, but we’ve boosted the signal with Wilmington startup WhyFly to offer robust internet in two ways. There will be dependable wifi and the option to tap into wired connectivity. Don't forget your thunderbolt adapter or usb 3.0/ethernet adapter if you want a hardwired connection.
